On Wednesday, October 08, 2008, four candidates for mayor
met at City Hall, at the invitation of the California City Employees
Association. The association asked
the four of us many questions about our views of the city and the issues of the
employees. At the conclusion of the
meeting Mr. Evans asked if I could speak with him, in his office, for a few
minutes. He began by shaking my
hand and told me that he felt very good about the election and was confident
he was going to win. He then
stated that he has never said anything “bad” about me and that he “respected” me
for the ten years I spent in the office as mayor.
After reading the October 30, 2008, issue of the Mojave
Desert News, my question is this – which David Evans was I speaking to that day
in his office? Was it the David
Evans who took out the full page
political advertisement and wrote
the editorial and posted the same day on the city’s website, or was it the David
Evans who had never said anything “bad” about me and who had nothing but
“respect” for me for the ten years I spent in office as mayor?
I really don’t know! Is his
political advertisement and editorial and example of him “saying one thing” and
, “doing another”, or is it possible that when Mr. Evans spoke with me in his
office and later wrote the advertisement he didn’t have sufficient command of
the English Language to know the
meaning of the words “bad” and “respect”?
(I am reminded of a line that was almost always in the old “Cowboy and
Indian” movies of my youth – “He speaks with a forked tongue” In this case,
could this be true of Mr. Evans?).
Also for Mr. Evans to assume to know the motivation behind my candidacy is a
form of projection born of arrogance.
I am running for the office of mayor for two reasons.
Firstly, because I believe in our city and believe I can help us realize
our promise and secondly, because many of you have asked me to do so.
It’s that simple.
Perhaps the most telling aspect of the candidates meeting
at City Hall, was that the California City Employees Association voted to
endorse me as their candidate for mayor.
The following is a quote from the letter delivered to my home by the
president of the California City Employees Association:
“…we have chosen to endorse the candidate whose ideals we feel will better serve the public and our members.
The members have voted to endorse
LARRY ADAMS”.
As much as I am tempted to reiterate in kind to Mr. Evans
political advertisement, I have chose not to do so.
Instead, I just ask you, as voters, to ask yourselves a simple question –
Is our city better off now than it was two years
ago?
Those of you who know me, know that I worked tirelessly for
our city when I was you mayor and have continued to do so for the past two
years. I ask for your support and
vote on November 4th.
Thank you,
