Tortoise Race for Cures

Last summer my wife and I started the Tortoise Race for Cures, as everyone knows by now, we were side tracked. The Tortoise Race For Cures was to benefit those with Autism. Since then we have found many children  organizations that need help. One of those organizations was the actor Paul Newman's Painted Turtle located in Leona Valley. I sculpted a Tortoise for them and the children there that suffer from many different terminal illnesses painted it, and signed it, and even had their foot prints in paint on it.
I also sculpted a tortoise for Autism speaks, which is our main focus with the Tortoise Race for Cures. The Red Hat Lady's here in California City designed a Red Hat paint job for the Tortoise, It then  went to The Autism Speaks walk, in Los Angeles last year, that tortoise came home with 3500 signatures from people wishing for a cure for this horrific disorder.  I have both of these Tortoises here at the studio.
We decided to do the Tortoise because the Hopi Indians believed they were the protectors of Children and because I read "The Tortoise and The Hair" to My children, even though my wife would swear, I change it to fit my own imagination, every time I read it to them.
The reason I'm saying all of this is because through all the trials and tribulation the last two years has brought us, we feel we have lost some of the passion that was The Tortoise Race For Cures. This evening I went out to my shop and said to my self we need to start again, the children with Autism, the children that suffer all kinds of afflictions can't cure them selves, with out a lot of prayer and people with hope to support them.
It's Time to finish this project and bring some hope to those that suffer. My Plan is to sculpt one more Tortoise, this time for Saint Jude. Cecil Cambel and the Desert Rose Club, from California City has expressed the desire to design a paint job for this Tortoise. It will then be taken to a Saint Jude Hospital where the children that can, along with all those hospital personnel and the children's parents will sign it. Then will bring it back to California City.
I have an 18 foot trailer in the back that I want to design and build a desert landscape on, then place the tortoises on that trailer to form a float, that we can use in our desert tortoise day parade here in California City. This float will  then become a traveling  float. A traveling float that can be taken to many different city's and parades. During which we will encourage everyone to donate to all the causes this float stands for. When its time we will bring it back to California City and auction it off, the proceeds will go to Autism Speakes, The Painted Turtle and Saint Jude.
I need help to do this, design and labor, I hope this is the kind of project that can unite our city behind a cause and show the world what California City And its People are really like. If you wish to join us in this effort and can donate some time.  I will get the publicity and bring tons of attention to this project. Perhaps by helping the children, we can in turn help bring much needed attention to our city and start filling those empty homes. If you can help please call me.

Open Mic at Old Cal City Coffee Company is canceled until next spring.  Due to lack of community support, we will no longer host Open Mic.  The economic climate dictates that we watch every expense.  We will be open 6 days a week from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Hopefully we will see better times by next season, and can bring this event back.  Sincerely, Cheryl

California City Ravens played their first game Saturday September 6th in Mojave and defeated their opponent Desert Christians with a surprising 22-7 final score. Coach Daniel Williford must be doing something right, because the Ravens are on to a great start and it looks like this season is going to be very entertaining. The crowd went wild many times and the cheerleaders must suffer from sore throat by now, but it was a great night for the Ravens first appearance.

Many Cal City residents made the short trip to Mojave to support the Ravens and of the many personalities that we spotted, were Mayor David Evans and his family, Councilman Mike Edmiston and Jan Sprague of City Hall (whose son Korey plays on the team). The most popular comment heard was: “This is a good field, but we can’t wait to have games in California City, on a brand new ‘terrain’.

BEAM ME UP… RUSSELL !

BEAM ME UP… RUSSELL, Could become a catchy phrase in California City, If Russell Michael as
Owner of California City Movie Studios, has it his way.

Russell’s new project is the construction of a super movie set to be used for a city special attraction similar to the famous Las Vegas “Star Trek Experience".

California City Studios envision this project as the city’s gigantic attraction that would bring tourism visitors in great number.

Studio designers associated with Warner Brothers are already working on the project and expect to have a model ready by late October.

“The Star Trek Experience" brought millions of people to Vegas… Something of that nature could be a great boost for our tourism industry.

"That is the main reason why it should be built in the city” said Russell Michael. “But in any case, it will be built”.

The 10 acres needed, can be found in town but if it doesn’t work, Russell has the property available and will build it as a movie set.

Our desert has been used in many science fiction episodes of all kinds including a few Star Trek ones.

Let’s go boldly where no one has ever gone… after all, the Mojave Desert is the most unique place in the galaxy !

As Trekkers say: “ Live long and prosper… Hailing frequencies closed”.
