City Young Adult Film Program To Begin At California City Studios

The film industry maybe getting a shot in the arm form inner city young adults that want to work in the film Industry. Russell Michael from California City Studios stated that he is in negotiation for an inner city youth program at the studio that will bring hundreds of young adults from the ages of 18 to 25 to his studio from Los Angeles to work in the film Industry throughout the next two years. This program will be sponsored in part from federal money. The program will give inner city young adults housing allowances and other perks if they stay in the program and out of trouble. The studio will offer the young adults services to film producers free of charge, the program sponsors will pay the young adults.

Russell stated that this type of program has never been tried before, but that his son who works for the IRS in Washington D.C. and is president of APIRE an organization that helps raise money for IRS employees for youth scholarships and other charitable programs within the IRS gave him the Idea.

I called some friends that have great national connection with inner city youth programs and told them of our area, the situation with the studio and we all agreed it was a great match said Russell. With any luck we will be up and running before the ink dries on the union contract talks in Los Angeles, the actors union has been treatening a strike for nearly a year now but are close to a settlement. We believe this will be a busy year for us and we hope to bring a lot more activity to the studio through this program.

Russell was asked if Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton were involved, Russell stated he was not at liberty to say who is behind the program until it is all set up. We are in talks with several nationally recognized individuals who have been organizing these types of programs for years, and hope to have a go very soon, Russell said.

Experienced film crews are leaving the state at record numbers following the production companies that are also leaving in record numbers, this will put an experienced work force back in Los Angeles that will have what it takes to compete with other states and countries that are drawing away all our talent. This may slow down runaway production just a little to, if the producers know they can get subsidized help, great sets, and a great location at a price compatible with all the tax breaks that other states are offering production companies to lore them away.

According to our sources if we bring back production companies to film in California they also benefit from Governor Schwarzenegger's new tax incentive to film companies returning to film In California. We would love to be a part of making the Governors new program to recharge the film industry a success said Russell.  We have certainly received a lot of help from his office and those he has appointed to film industry positions throughout the last 2 1/2 years, said Russell. We have plenty of high profile support for this program and all the right people to make this work, said Russell.

We need a good shot in the arm, so does the Film Industry in Southern California, said Russell. The fact that we don't have sound stages at the studio takes us out of the running for a regular film school, we would need at least a 10,000 square foot sound stage for that to work for us, so we decided to try this work program instead, while the city works out water and fire suppression issues in our area, said Russell. We need a program that works well for our area, the studio as it is, and the city, fortunately this program also falls into the national category as well an can be connected with another program already in place nationally if needed.

After the first year we should be sending back 20 well qualified young adults a month to replenish the industry work force that is leaving Los Angeles in record numbers. This should be a great help in stemming some runaway production from Southern California maybe even bring a few production companies back, said, Russell Michael.
