Ed Waldheim, California City Optimist Club President, presented the winner of the Optimist Scholarship 2009  Award for $500 and it went to Chiloe Alius. "This was a hard one to select. After going thorough the candidates there was a tie, and another set of judges went thorough these two and Chiloe Alius got it" said Ed. Every year, the Optimists are proud to help our youth with this award and many more like the Essay Contest and the Oratorical Contest, etc... Congratulation to Chiloe Alius from all of us at the California City Optimist Club. The Club's meetings are open to the public and are at Chuck's Pizza, 7101 California City BLVD, every second Monday of the month at 6:00 pm.

“Visions of the Southwest” is Theme of

May 2-3 Art Show

CALIFORNIA CITY – The California City Arts Commission is preparing for their annual “Arts by the Lake” art show on May 2-3, 2009, which will showcase the beauty of the American Southwest.

 

The theme, entitled “Visions of the Southwest”, will incorporate works in all media, including fabric arts and sculpture.  Photography will play a large part in the exhibit, as will original paintings and a special section dedicated to the drawings and paintings of our young school children.

 

The art show is scheduled for May 2-3 at the Community and Arts Center building in Central Park, and the show opens on Saturday, May 2nd at 10 am.  Sunday’s show will open at 11 am.  Artists in the area are cordially invited to show their work, as well as many from outside East Kern County. The successful exhibit, now in it’s 7th year, has been a favorite in the community, and it draws many people in to view the show as well as to participate in it.

Local Student Wins Optimist Club Oratorical Contest

 

California City –Austin Gomez, an 8th Grade Student at California City Middle School, recently won the Optimist International Oratorical Contest held by the Club of California City.  Theme for this year’s speech was “For Me, Optimism is …”

Gomez was awarded the California City Optimist's First Place Medallion and a One Hundred Dollar Savings Bond for the honor.  In addition, Gomez will participate in the Zone Level presentations held in Bakersfield on Sunday May 3 in the Bakersfield Veterans Hall, 2100 Ridge Rd. 

Austin will be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the zone. The winner of the zone competition goes on to the regional level and district level competitions.  College scholarships are available for top winners at the district level.

“Austin Gomez did a wonderful job of articulating this year’s theme “For Me, Optimism is …” He expressed himself well during the speech presentation and deserved the honor of first place,” Club President Ed Waldheim said.

The second place winner was Marie Soledad Watschke. She received the California City Optimist’s Second Place Medallion and a Fifty Dollar Savings Bond.  The third place winner was Daniel Fritz he received the California City Optimist’s Third Place Medallion and a Fifty Dollar Savings Bond.

This was the First Annual California City Optimist Club Oratorical Contest.  The California City Optimist Club has been active in the community since 2001.  Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in, include the California City Optimist Club Scholarship Program, Optimist International Essay Contest, Books for Schools, Junior Optimist Octagon International - JOOI Club, and the Annual Christmas Tree Auction at Hacienda Elementary School.

Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with 120,000 adult and youth members in 3,800 clubs in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico and throughout the world. Carrying the motto “Bringing Out the Best in Kids,” Optimists conduct positive service projects that reach more than six million young people each year. The winner of the district competition will be sent to the international-level contest.  College scholarships are available for top winners at the district and international levels.
