Continuation of "A Call To Arms"
by Lou Peralta We as citizens
of this great city must take it upon
ourselves to correct the problem. It
will take the efforts of many
volunteers, and not just the usual
ones who seem to always be there
when we need them. It will take the
investment from all of us (not
monetary) but of labor to bring the
park up to the high standards—that
once was. Mr. Bevins and yours truly, agreed that he will provide me with information regarding specific urgent projects at the park. For example:
·
Repair the
bridge over portions that have been
vandalized or burned or that don’t
meet the current State standards.
That’s a project that is not so hard
to accomplish when creative people
get together.
·
There is
erosion on “Hamburger Hill (where
the waterfall is located).” We think
it can be fixed quickly. He’ll
provide us with what needs to be
done and I believe we can do it. I
will donate some of my equipment and
I know we can get several other
contractors to donate their
equipment and time. We will also
need a few strong men to do the
final hillside work, before we can
plant hillside cover.
·
We looked at
the bricks that have been broken by
vandals along the canals atop
“Hamburger Hill.” Mr. Bevin
indicated that we can cut the broken
bricks and replace them with others
or perhaps add cement coping, thus
repairing the entire system in short
time. I believe that three or four
volunteers who know how to work with
bricks and cement can do it in a
weekend.
·
We need to get
the big water pump working. We’ve
been told that it works, so all we
need is power to it. Mr. Bevins will
figure the costs to run the pump so
that our waterfall can once again be
operating.
·
I met several
people already that will help clean
the lake’s edges of debris and
weeds.
·
I have several
people who will help cut dead or
hanging tree limbs. Soon I will
have more details as to the
specifics for each project and we’ll
begin recruiting. In the meantime, I
would like to hear from many of you
who wish to help. Please send me
your e-mail address and your
telephone number(s) as well.
I will help coordinate the “work
groups” and I know we can have all
this accomplished by springtime. A cooperative
effort by our citizens will once
again bring us pride to have one of
the most beautiful parks anywhere.
That’s the way it was a few years
ago. Let’s do it again. Let’s make
it an old-fashion “Barn Raising”
event/party/joint effort.
